SAVE KENYAN EYES

Quick Summary: A collaborative project with the Mombasa Eye Hospital to explore the most effective means of assisting outreach programmes and providing medical students with opportunities to train in under-resourced settings.

Few would argue that eyesight is one of the invaluable blessings for any person. To be deprived of it due to avoidable causes is a tragedy. Yet, even in this seemingly highly developed world, the World Health Organisation in its Vision 2020 Action Plan, estimated that up to 80% of world’s blindness is avoidable. This problem is all that more acute in developing countries with limited resources.

The Mombasa Eye Hospital in Kenya, rallying under its motto of “Let’s Work Together to Eradicate Blindness”, seeks to fight avoidable blindness through a series of innovative outreach programmes including those targeting cataract, diabetes-related eye disorders, eye screening at schools and treatment of children suffering from refractive errors, strabismus and Vitamin A deficiency. MegaReach is working with the Mombasa Eye Hospital to explore the most effective means of assisting these outreach programmes and providing medical students with opportunities to train in such under-resourced settings. We hope to issue a call for assistance when a sustainable long-term plan has been formulated. If you are aware of such model programmes or placement opportunities, please do share the details through the “Comments” section of the “Contact” tab in the main menu. Alternatively, if you feel some remote communities would benefit from outreach programmes, please do let us know through the “Request” section under the “Contact” tab.
