BRAILLE

FOR KAITHADY

Quick Summary: A fundraising contribution that helped to provide a Braille Machine to the Nuffield School - Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind in Kaithady, Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

The triumph of human endeavour over adversity is always an uplifting experience. When that is entirely dedicated to the comfort of innocent school-aged children, who are suffering from long-term educational challenges, that experience becomes so much sweeter and personal. The Nuffield School - Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind in Kaithady, Jaffna, Sri Lanka, (http://csdeafblind.lk/nuffield_school.php) is just such a place where moments of magic unfold on a day by day basis.

A tour party of MARDiTRePers had the unique privilege of visiting the superb facility in Kaithady in July 2015. We were all left speechless by the sheer enthusiasm of the students and staff alike, and their unconquerable positivism. If ever one is in need of a boost through witnessing, first-hand, the wonder of human kindness and hope, Kaithady will deliver it, without fail, in bucket loads. We came to know dozens of children, of all age groups, happily immersed in studies, in a spotless, entirely uplifting environment.

Our tour party, comprising of medical students from the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry and the Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, Plymouth University, had by then raised a total of £500, through a series of events held in Plymouth, to be donated to the school. We were thrilled when the principal of the school and the senior staff advised us that the money would meet almost the full cost of a Braille Machine that the staff had been dreaming of for a long time. It would help them prepare note so much more effectively as the machines they were using were well past their sell-by dates. It meant so much that we could make a meaningful contribution to such a laudable venture. There was not one dry eye when we finally bid goodbye having enjoyed the most wonderful hospitality that day.

Kaithady represents hope and delivers on its promise to make the world a better place to hundreds of really deserving children. Please do contact us if you are in a position to assist this most worthy of organisations, in any way. Please visit them, if ever you do get the opportunity. We guarantee, it will be a life-changing experience.
